Summary
As the cigarette burns, both tobacco and paper are vaporized. Researchers have identified more than 4000 different compounds, which are released and actively inhaled by smokers and nonsmokers alike. The individual, who is actively smoking, inhales concentrated primary smoke. The nonsmokers, who happen to be in the vicinity, inhale secondary smoke.
There is little doubt that all of these compounds have, at least, some effect upon the tissues of the human body. Many chemicals and irritants such as hydrogen cyanide and tars are responsible for cancer, emphysema and other problems in the respiratory system.
The problems in the musculoskeletal system seem to be related to two of these substances which are most prevalent in cigarette smoke: nicotine and carbon monoxide. The effects of these two substances will be the primary focus of this website.
